As a result, serious games are designed in close cooperation with clients and specialized domain experts. This demands strong dedication of both the client and designers during the full development process.

Exciting adventure
In a sense, designing a serious game is an exciting adventure. At the start, initial ambitions and goals are made clear, although it's not yet obvious what the final result will look like. Moreover, ambitions and goals tend to change during the process, because the designers and the client gain a deeper understanding of the knowledge domain. It’s only then that they discover the ultimate form and shape of the game.
In general the development process starts with a concept phase. The first step in this phase is to gain a deep understanding of the didactic fundamentals of the future design. During the concept phase, project ambitions, didactic goals, explicit and implicit client expectations are brought together in a conceptual game design.
Production only starts when all stakeholders have approved the game concept and follows a clear plan with several phases, all ending in a predefined milestone. At each milestone, project progress and results are evaluated with the client.
