Waterbazen

Everyone in The Netherlands pays water taxes. But not everyone knows what happens with that money. How do you use a game as communication device from water authorities to citizens?

In 2008, national elections for the Dutch water authorities were held for the first time. To raise awareness among people, accross the country the campaign Jij zit aan de knoppen ('You are in control') was organised. The tasks of the water authorities where explicitly brought to the attention, because people don't vote until they know why.

Water authorities

Ranj developed the online strategy game Waterbazen. In this game, players step into the role of the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier. They take over the core tasks and responsibilities of this water authority.

For an accelerated four year term, players determine how to distribute the revenues and investments of the water authority. In this, security and management of the domestic water level are paramount.

Waterbazen was part of a crossmedial campaign organised for the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier.
